The real untameable force

May 9, 2010

A few nights ago two different Facebook friends decided to post a link to the new music video by Miley Cyrus, Can’t Be Tamed.

Oh my.

I’m not going to post a link for you here.  If you want to see it, it’s not hard to find.  Use your mAD gOoGLe SKiLz.

This isn’t the first time a young star has decided to break out of her Disney good-girl image by making a dark or sexually suggestive music video.  Some girls skip the music and go straight to a raunchy film not fit for the audience they’ve been cultivating up until this time.  Either way, a statement is made and a new path is forged, and once that happens there is no going back.

There is definitely fame in this direction, and for a while there will be money, too.   But the money goes quickly when you have to live up to the new lifestyle that comes along with the new path.  A few trips to rehab are also a sure way to wipe out the bank account, too.  The fame lasts longer, but not all fame is positive, witness the front of the weekly tabloids and the gossip channels of talk radio and television.  Just ask Lindsey Lohan.

There are ways to mature on the stage and screen without resorting too over-sexed shock value.  I’m not sure why a girl so young would agree to do something like this.   The video wasn’t just a low-cut dress or a wiggle in the dance.  It was overtly sexual and very dark.  And did I mention the Creep Factor?

As I watched the video I kept wondering how Miley’s daddy could let his 17-year-old daughter dress like that and move like that.  I wonder what he’d think if he could watch the men and boys as they watch her on the screen.  I wonder what he tells his fellow church members.  I wonder if he realizes they’re watching that video too, and it inspires the same things in them as it does any other man.  Just because this sort of thing is normal in Hollywood doesn’t mean it’s good.

It seems to me that if you’re going to head down the same path as  Britney Spears, you might first want to check out where Britney Spears has ended up and see if it still looks so appealing.
