Not so small at all

August 28, 2011

Many times I’ve heard the pithy saying “Don’t sweat the small stuff…and it’s all small stuff.”

Today that saying just makes me mad.  It’s not true.  It’s not true at all.

Hurricanes are not small stuff.

Earthquakes are not small stuff.

Finding out the baby you’ve been carrying and eagerly awaiting will not survive is not small stuff.

Watching a beloved grandparent deteriorate isn’t small stuff.

Questionable leadership is not small stuff.

Passive and/or judgmental Believers are not small stuff.

Adulterous affairs are not small stuff.

Losing one’s home isn’t small stuff.

Being in constant pain isn’t small stuff.

These are things that in the past week have either touched my life or the life of someone I care about.  They are the aches and pains of living, the things that are bitter and not the least bit sweet.  They aren’t small stuff.

Jesus never thought they were small stuff.  He never belittled our pains and griefs and fears, or told us to buck up and quit whining.  If anyone would know that life is full of Big Stuff, it would be a guy who was betrayed by a close friend, falsely accused, unfairly interrogated, savagely beaten, forced to carry his own instrument of death, and publicly executed…naked.

May He give me grace to not clock the next person I hear use that terrible saying.
