The happiest penguin ever

March 19, 2012

A couple of days ago I ran across a little video that reminded me so strongly of the Far-Away Sparkette that I had to post it on her wall.  This is exactly what she was like when she was little:

She had boundless energy.  She made everyone else around her look as if they were moving in slo-mo.  We spent a lot of time wondering if she would ever wear down.  We spent a lot of time wondering why she was doing whatever it was she was doing.  We spent a of time hiding the breakables.

Yes, she is the kid who never wanted to sleep.  Yes, she is the kid we couldn’t keep in the crib.  Yes, she is the kid we couldn’t keep clothes on.

I only got to cuddle with her when she was sick because otherwise she couldn’t be bothered to sit still.  Life was full of things to explore.  Or cut up.  Or flush down the toilet.  There was never a dull moment, no matter how hard I prayed for one.

The Jr. Spark and the three Sparkettes are very different in so many ways.  On more than one occasion I’ve described them as night, day, afternoon, and Mars.   They have some similarities, too.  They are each very intelligent. They each have some level of talent for music.  They are all creative.  They all love mushrooms.  And they all share a warped, random sense of humor.  They’re fun people, if not rather strange.

My happy penguin grew up to be a wife and a mama.   It’s funny to hear her talk about cleaning and cooking and making the dog get off the bed.  But she’s still a happy penguin in many ways.  She hates to be bored and can create things to do.   She can still make the people around her look as if they are moving in slo-mo.  If she doesn’t fly, it won’t be for lack of flapping her wings and leaping off the ground with all her might.

But for this penguin, I’m betting on flight.
