When Power comes…

September 3, 2013

They gathered because they didn’t know what else to do.  He’d said to wait. He said power was coming.  And so they waited.  They weren’t sure what power would look like.  They weren’t sure what it would sound like, or feel like.  Nevertheless, they waited.

And then Power came.  Power came like the wind.  Power came like fire.

Power had a voice, and as they yielded themselves to it, they discovered that Power spoke to them and through them.

And then he stood up– the one who once argued, the same one who betrayed and ran– and he spoke in strength and confidence and…Power.  He echoed the words of the prophet from long ago as he began to speak:

“‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.”
Acts 2:17-18

The fiery man said many things that day as Power began to burn in him in a whole new way.  But I love this part in particular.  I love it for many reasons.

As time winds down, dark will try to get darker, but light will respond by burning brighter.  And up until the last moment, God is going to keep on talking, revealing His heart and mind.  And He is going to talk to and through all people.

Dreams and visions, words of prophecy.

Old and young.

Male and female.

Notice it doesn’t say that He’s going to pour out His Spirit on Christians, but on all people.  All flesh.  All mankind.  “Even on my servants”, which almost seems to be an afterthought to “all people”.  People who don’t know Him are going to have encounters with Him.  People who don’t serve Him are going to find themselves speaking His truth.  People who are clueless are going to shine a flashlight into dark places, and those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, will– and the one holding the flashlight may not be able to see a thing because they themselves still walk in darkness.  Even those who consider themselves His enemies run the risk of revealing His nature and His goodness every time they open their mouths.  All flesh is all flesh, and when the Creator of the Universe decides to share, there is no predicting  or dictating the size of your portion.

It is worth remembering:  all truth is God’s truth.

It is equally worth remembering that not everything that is true is truth.

May Power be your wind and your fire, and may Power speak to you and through you.
