The world seems to be enamored with bad news. I’ve heard it blamed upon the media trying to make a buck and take control of the culture.
But they couldn’t really make a buck and take control of the culture if there wasn’t something in the human race ready to throw them a dollar and the reigns, could they?
We humans tend to like drama. We want to know who the bad guys are and what they’re up to. We want to rant about the injustices…and there are always injustices.
When it comes to the news, we’re not happy until we’re not happy.
But really, what kind of happy is that?
I love that in several places in the Psalms it states outright that when people do bad things in order to stymie good, God laughs. Seriously…He just laughs at them. I’m not talking an “oh, look how cute” laugh. I’m talking about the God of the universe sitting on His throne, laughing at the thought that humans could mess up His plans and send Him scurrying off, wringing His hands in anxiety.
He laughs at the plans and the schemes. He laughs at the arrogance. He laughs at the ridiculousness. He laughs. And when He laughs, His joy is released to us so that we can absorb His confidence in His own goodness and sovereignty.
I want to be on the side of a laughing God. I want to care little for the conniving of mankind, and I want to care a lot about joy.
I want to be a contagious laugher.
Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
“Let us break their chains
and throw off their shackles.”
The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them. Psalm 2:1-4
The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming. Psalm 37:12-13
