Catching breath

October 11, 2015

She closed her eyes and stood still, waiting, although she wasn’t sure what she was waiting for.

Quietly, almost imperceptibly, a whisper of a breeze began to move around her.  It brushed against her skin, kissing her hands and caressing her neck.  She lifted her face to it.

The breeze strengthened and a strand of hair escaped and began to tickle her cheek. She lifted a hand to tuck it back behind an ear, and as she did her sleeve began to flutter in the wind.  She lifted her other arm and opened them both wide.  A light gust blew over her as a soft whistle rose from the trees nearby.

A soft smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.

She wondered what it felt like to fly.  Or to be a sailboat, lifted by the water but propelled by the wind.  She considered how odd it is that the same thing that extinguishes a candle on a birthday cake actually enrages and spreads a forest fire.

And she longed for the day she would no longer be earthbound.
