Uncontrolled landing

July 9, 2021

One foot on the ground and one in the air,

midstride.

I’ve already shifted my weight forward,

propelled by momentum,

when I suddenly realize the visible path has disappeared

and there is no longer a solid place for my foot to land.

I thought I’d see the end of the road

long before I reached the edge

but here I am with no time to stop

or even slow

or maybe make it look like I meant to do that.

The ground rises up,

and gravity opens her gaping jaws to swallow me

as I lurch forward in a graceless somersault

and perhaps it will be a relief to let her.

So often what we call a leap of faith

is really just a no-notice face plant.
